ANTONIS KARKAGIANNIS (1932-2010) was distinguished for his commitment to the principles of journalism, for his hard work and honesty, for his social education and for his outspokenness. From 1983 until his death, he worked at the newspaper Kathimerini as an editor, editor-in-chief, editorial director and publisher.
He was admitted to the Law School of the University of Athens in 1955, but abandoned his studies two years later due to his involvement with the Communist Party. From 1953 to 1973 he was imprisoned and exiled repeatedly due to his political beliefs. He participated in the publication of the illegal Nea Genia (a magazine of the EPON) and the illegal Rizospastis. During the Seven Years’ War, he founded, together with others, Olkos Publications, from which he withdrew when the dictatorship took effect. In May 1972, together with Christos Papoutsakis, he published the magazine Anti, but the Dictatorship authorities banned its circulation immediately after the first issue.
Among others, Karkagiannis was also a co-founder of the magazines Synkhronos Kinamatografos (1969), Tora (1973) and O politís (1976).
