  • Product Description

Dimitris Manikas, professor in the Advanced School of Applied Arts in Vienna, has been involved mainly with public architecture and primarily in the Austrian capital. His projects frequently demand the solving of formidable problems, since they involve, as a rule, extensions, restorations or attribution of new functions to old shells, works sometimes of famous architects of the past. He exhausts every possibility of processing the small scale and applies his personal idiom of a ‘clearly defined austerity and clarity’.
Manikas has participated in some important competitions for buildings in Athens, such as the Cultural Centre of the Municipality (1977), the Acropolis Museum, the extension of the Advanced School of Fine Arts and the configuration of the metropolitan park at Elliniko. He was awarded first prize for his design study for Constitution (Syntagma) Square (1999).
His general approach takes into account the historicity of the space and the particularities of the urban landscape (low rise, bright light, fragmentation of the building scale, need for greenery and leisure areas), while the popular ‘poetry of the minimal’ is the appropriate option for the specific built environment.
