  • Product Description

When five-year old Miriam boards the Serpa Pinto in 1941, heading to Mexico, she is unaware that she and her mother, Kate, just escaped from the mass arrests and extermination camps. They are leaving behind a world consisting of Communists and Nazis, Spanish Republicans and Fascists, French collaborators, resistance fighters and Jewish refugees. Approaching adolescence, Miriam faces new challenges as Kate moves with her children to New Zealand. By the age of twelve, Miriam has fled two wars and lived on three continents. Gradually understanding the horror of the Holocaust, she begins training as a doctor: the preservation of life and alleviation of pain become the focus of her professional career. Back to Europe, she settles in London and marries a German painter, Kortokraks, inaugurating a new exciting chapter in her adventurous life.
