I stood for a brief moment, not wanting to give the impression that I was eavesdropping, yet the lady, all dressed in black, went on: “He was in great shape when I took him to the hospital on Christmas Eve! And within three days… they killed him off”. After a swift conference with my conscience, we decided that it might have useful to learn more about this obvious, as it seemed, case of medical malpractice.

Thanos Pipilis was born in Athens, and, as a child, he heartily played in the Athenian Champ de Mars, Pedion tou Areos, (at a time when children were still able to walk freely there) and in the north suburban of Kifisia, where he spent his summers. He studied Medicine at the University of Athens and after he completed his national service and his mandatory rural practice, he specialized in Cardiology, attending graduate studies at London and at Oxford. Since 1992 he has been working in Athens. This is the first time he attempts to write something other than a scientific paper.
