Stephen G. Miller, Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Berkley, has presented us with his 46 years of archaeological discoveries, research, as well as ceaseless efforts to showcase and protect Ancient Nemea. Product Description
Stephen Miller has presented us with the most significant of his archaeological discoveries at Nemea, a personal autobiography, a social history with many local anecdotes, a description of the creation of an archaeological park of about 180 stremmata with protective fencing and framing cypress trees, the construction of an archaeological museum and the discovery of thousands of ancient artifacts that have gone into it, the revival of the ancient Nemean Games (www.nemeangames.org), the reconstruction of six columns of the Temple of Nemean Zeus to add to those three that have always stood – these are just a few of the results of the author’s life work. His pride is perhaps most obvious as he details the contributions of the local people to the realization of his dream, and their developing pride in their own work as well as his.
He explains how he began his preliminary work in Athens and Berkeley in 1971, and his initial on-site efforts in 1973. He acknowledges that, when he began, he did not think that he would still be at Nemea half a century later, but that history quickly became inevitable. It may not be clear to the reader why a young man from the American Midwest, of Swiss-German ancestry, would spend his life in Greece, beginning in 1967, although Miller seems to think that it had been preordained. But whatever the cause, as we read Nemea and Me, we can be happy that Indiana Miller is now a Greek citizen.
