Product Description
In February 1942, while the Athenians were dying in the streets from starvation, Stamatis Hatziyiannis found a job at the People’s General Hospital (Laiko). Although he was initially hired as a food-service worker, he had to take on multiple duties, serving as a nurse, a paramedic, even as a cleaner. After his retirement (1960) he vividly recorded his hospital work experiences during the Occupation, the Dekemvriana (Battle of Athens, December 1944), the Civil War and the difficult post-war years –some tragic, others funny– relying on his extraordinary memory. Working at the Laiko Hospital, he was lucky to get to know many remarkable doctors, who later became eminent university professors. He shared with them the same duty: the struggle to save a human life. With his pen, Hatziyiannis not only saved his own memories but also set up a living monument for the people who kept the hospital together during the first, critical years of its operation
