• Product Description

This book traces the historical transformations of the younger Aegina, especially during the period following the relocation from the medieval capital Aegina, also known as Palaia Chora, to the new city at the port. “Perdikiotika” are one of the many “Places of Aegina” that participate in this transformation in their own way, holding together lands and families, investing in collaborations inside and outside Aegina, offering a familiar place for gatherings and reconciliation. They were founded at the end of the 19th century as a grocery store and the headquarters of a commercial enterprise but, in fact, they constitute and reconstitute an entire era; that is why the present study is not only concerned with the history of the building and its founders but also with the stories of the people that they compose its “biography” and with it the “biography” of the younger Aegina, which is essentially the path of the society and economy of the newly established Greek state from the 19th to the middle of the 20th century.
