Product Description
Τhe Katholikon of the Lavra is an iconic building for the history of Mount Athos, since it represents the first of the big katholikons erected on the peninsula, in effect initiating the building history of the monasteries of Mount Athos in the form we know today. In addition, it is a building firmly dated to 963, and exact dating is scarce for Middle Byzantine buildings, even for the most important. Also, the circumstances of its foundation and construction are largely documented and well-known. However, the Katholikon has a limited presence in the international bibliography, mainly thanks to the studies by Panos Mylonas. Nonetheless, until today, no monograph that deals with the entire building, its history, its influences, and its successive phases, with detailed drawings and photographs, has ever been written. Based on detailed computer-designed drawings and new photographs, this monograph attempts to fill this gap, offering a detailed and methodical study of the history and architecture of the Katholikon.
Four appendices are included: the first concerns the ceramic decoration of the nave with Iznik tiles, the second offers a corpus of the churches with column-supported narthexes-litae, the third, which was authored by Dr. Vasiliki Sythiakakis-Kritsimallis, deals with the subject of the marble decoration of the church, and the fourth is a synopsis of the churches with domes on cylindrical drums.
An extensive English and Russian summary is also included.
