  • Product Description

Τhe movement of modern architecture makes its appearance in Greece in the 1930s. Among its manifestations are modernist flats, hospitals, industrial buildings, and houses in the center and suburbs of cities. Nonetheless, the most important achievement of this movement in Greece is the erection of new school units during the second tenure of Venizelos’ government, after 1930. A characteristic example of the modernization policy implemented by Venizelos, the more than 3.000 schools erected throughout Greece became flagships of knowledge as well as social hubs, where many generations of young Greeks received their education.

This project was carried out by the technical services of the Ministry of Education, that is from a public organization which undertook the planning and implementation of the largest school building project in Europe during the Interwar period. The result is documented in the unique book on the modern architecture movement in Greece during the 1930s, that appeared in 1938, edited by the architect Patroclos Karantinos. This valuable and hard-to-find book is being republished on the occasion of the International Conference “The Bauhaus in Greece”, held in Athens in May 2019. The publication of this volume is exclusively granted by Stavros Niarchos Foundation
