Inspired by the retables of the Renaissance, which narrate the lives of saints, the author has created the portrait of the mother, Hedy Diner, in three parts, bound together through the exciting personality of the Hungarian-Jew heroine of the book, who was born in the small valley village of Pincehely, by the shores of Dunabe, and came to Athens shorty before the outbreak of World War II. Having lost her family in Nazi’s death camps, she survived thanks to her marriage to her Greek husband, Mitsos, and built her life in a turbulent Athens that she loved and made her own.

The first part of the book deals with the art of the portrait and the questions that arise when you are planning to write about a person as intimate to you as your mother. The second part presents a number of personal testimonies of the book’s heroine who narrates in a spontaneous and straightforward manner the events that shaped her life, from prewar Hungary to Athens in the years of the German Occupation and after the war. In the third part, the author offers a thorough and at the same time sensitive insight into the complicated and the same time multifaceted relationship between mother and daughter.
