This technique is inspired by an early 20th-century visual trick known as shadow cinema. It was based on a small Chinese shadow theater, where a paper roll moved behind a clear frame with black vertical lines.

This clever setup allowed characters to appear as if they were moving by quickly alternating between two phases of motion.

Just like in movies or animation, the illusion of movement works because of a property of our eyes: the retina holds on to an image for a split second after it disappears. This is the same principle behind flipbooks—when you flip through the pages quickly, the pictures seem to move.
